Poetry Programs and Keynotes
Venus Jones is a poetic soldier, taking a stand for love, freedom of expression and some historical figures of the past and present. This program is off Broadway style. The artist shows up dressed in uniform and performs some of her most popular poems in an effort to wage peace. This production won most inspiring solo performance of 2012 at the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival.
Venus shares her poetic slide show tribute to the Buffalo Soldiers and discusses the complicated history between black American veterans and their country.
Venus improvises with your choice jazz trio or full piece band if your budget allows and begins her set with her cover of “Stormy Weather”. This jam session is never the same twice. She lets the music dictate what she reads next. One thing she will guarantee is a tribute to legendary jazz musicians like Ella Fitzgerald and poets like Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston. She’ll also describe how she was inspired to write some of the original works found in her book “Lyrics for Langston” which was endorsed by the Langston Hughes Family Museum.
Kwanzaa: Living on Principle
Venus sets the table, lights the kinara and shares a few African proverbs and poetic affirmations that celebrate the Nguzo Saba or each principle of Kwanzaa. She also explains why Kwanzaa matters and can be celebrated 365 days a year by people of every ethnicity, heritage and faith.
Get ready to think outside the box. Venus delivers some of her more provocative work from her Polly Ticks CD on identity politics and what unites and divides us. This is more of an intimate set with the artist. Learn how she became a champion for diversity. Listen as she shares personal stories and poems that touch on the politics of race, racism, interracial relationships, religious tolerance, war and peace.
This program is a celebration of unsung female heroes from the past and present. You will move closer to your goals after hearing courageous stories mixed with unforgettable quotes and poems from her best selling book, “She Rose: on a journey from girl to Goddess.”
